More eyes will be on the roads this winter

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:43 am

t the age of 16, one of our reporters at GoodNews PDX ran off the road in the snow and was stuck in an embankment.  While he was never in any serious danger thanks to passing motorists, the dark, cold night couldn’t help but drive home how hazardous roads can be around Oregon in the winter.  That’s why we are all VERY jazzed about the latest news from the Department of Transportation.

When the snow starts to fall, you may notice more emergency lights on state roads.  The DOT authorized 500 hours of overtime for Oregon State Troopers.  Those troopers will be staged at some of the most hazardous spots in the winter, mountain passes.  Expect to see them stationed on I-5, I-84 plus the Willamette, Santiam and Mount Hood Passes.

Oregon woman changes lives in Africa

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:40 pm

If you ever doubt that one person can make an unbelievable difference, read this story from The Oregonian:

http://www.oregonlive.com/O/index.ssf/2008/10/winnie_barron_cofounded_a_keny.html

Wendy Owens does a phenomenal job telling the story of Winnie Barron, a local woman who has devoted the last ten years to making a difference in Kenya, not by simply sending a check, but by rolling up her sleeves and taking on the dirty work herself.  From her efforts to build a community resource center for children to her plans to hike through miles of African jungle and mountains as a fundraiser, she truly is the personification of a modern day hero.

Some businesses doing just fine despite the economy

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:38 pm

While the economy may not be doing so hot on the whole, not everyone is feeling the pinch according to this story in the Registerguard:

http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/business/1052157-41/story.csp

Editor’s note:  At Goodnews PDX we are hearing similar stories in Portland, Seattle, Salem . . . all over.  Even though stories come out everyday about the perils of the economy, stuff like this is PROOF that the world is NOT collapsing and we CAN come out of this as a nation.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

A sigh of relief

Florence Snyder is home safe tonight.

The 87-year old woman, barely five feet two, with silver hair and retro eyeglasses dropped her husband off at 10:30 this morning before heading of to a function at the couples church.  She never showed at the church and didn’t come home early that afternoon as planned.

Husband Allen says the love of his life does get confused sometimes but she’s never disappeared before.  Sheriff’s deputies tracked her down at a local convenience store this evening.  Snyder didn’t know where she was but wasn’t hurt or in any sort of immediate danger.  She’s safe and sound.

Editors note: You always hear when someone goes missing and they are NOT found . . . it’s a blessing to hear when a search goes right.
