Blazers best they’ve been in SIX YEARS

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:49 am

With a 101-92 spanking of Denver at an icy Rose Garden last night, the Blazers are now 18-11 one-third of the way through the season . . . that’s their best record in six years.

That record also has them sitting tied with Denver at the top of the Northwest Division standing.

Lots of laughs to be found in attempted jail break

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:53 pm

Eight teen girls tried to break out of the Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany this week.  Allegedly, the eight girls ranging between 13 and 17 years old staged a fake brawl, then turned on three male security guards.  The octuplet beat the three men into submission and then ran for it, only to be thwarted by high fencing around the grounds.

GoodNewsPDX only has two questions . . . how long do you think it will take the three male security guards to live down the fact that they got their butts kicked by a bunch of teen-girls?

And while we’re at it, these girls went through the trouble to draw up an elaborate plan to fake a major brawl . . . don’t you think they would have thought things threw one step further and asked “how are we going to get passed those big fences?”

Former Duck lands with the Spurs

Former University of Oregon Guard Malik Hairston is back in the NBA.  He was cut by the Spurs in October and sent to the development league where he put up impressive numbers with the Austin Toros.

Hairston was signed on Monday to the Spurs roster but no word on length of the contract.

Broken hand doesn’t get in the way of this cheerleader

In a Keri Strugg-esque scene, 17-year-old Jared O’Loughlin took home his second straight championship at the Oregon Cheerleading Coaches Association All State Competition despite the fact that he had a broken hand.

Even more impressive considering O’Loughlin’s routine involved acrobatics like handsprings.

You can read the full recount in the Valley Times.  In the meantime . . . give us a J . . . . J! . . . gives us an A . . . .A!

Going out with a W

This season hasn’t quite shaped up the way Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren hoped.  Just a few years removed from being robbed by the refs from playing in the Super Bowl, the Hawks only have a handful of wins and zero hope of the playoffs.  But in this weekends final home game against the Brett-Favre-Lead-Jets, they gave their departing head coach an impressive performance and walked out with a 13-3 victory.

Fans showed their appreciation for Holmgren’s time in Seattle (turning a perennial cellar dweller into a repeat NFC West Champion) by pelting the field with snowballs after the game ended.  Holmgren said it was the one time in his life he’s enjoyed being hit by snow.

Hey . . . did you hear that there’s a snow storm hitting Portland this weekend?  Me too!   Here’s a selection of all the NON-SNOW related stories underway in the willamette valley.

The massive snow storm won’t frost the holiday spirit for these volunteers.

Vets in Eugene are celebrating the spirit of the season together.

A hiker who vanished in the cold is found safe and sound.

OSU Prof gets Obama nod

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:23 am

Jane Lubchenco, current professor at OSU, will now be the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under President-elect Barack Obama.

Here at GoodNewsPDX . . . we don’t really understand what that means.  But we understand it is a huge honor.  Check out more coverage here.

Roy is just (fifty) TWO good

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:15 am

Playing against the Phoenix Suns and Shaq on their home court, the Blazers rallied last night to get the 124-119 victory.  But the real story of the night was The Natural.  Brandon Roy.  The former Husky.

Roy dropped 52 points on the Suns.  That’s two shy of the franchise record (only a handful of players have topped the half century mark in Blazers’ history).  Of those 52, five were hung in the last minute to break a 119-119 tie.

One for the karma file

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:03 pm

We here at GoodNewsPDX are fans of karma.  And we realize sometimes it takes time to show its face but when it does, it is oh so sweet.

You may remember Debra Markham from her efforts to prosecute two middle school boys for sex abuse in the spring of 2007.  If not, feel free to read this recap.  One of GoodNewsPDX’ staff writers covered the case and, to be fair, Markham was quite genial with the press.  She returned calls even if it meant staying after 5:30 on a Friday and she was always available to answer questions after a hearing.

That being said, it would be fair to characterize her prosecutorial efforts in this case as . . . heated.  Zealous.  Over zealous.  A bit over the top.  The boys were eventually acquitted and returned to their normal lives.  Markham continued her service in the DA’s office, and it seemed we were done with the McMinville court house.

Until THIS came out.  It seems Markham spent time in jail recently after allegedly popping her husband in the face.  She has also been sacked relieved of her job (officials say it’s for personal reasons and won’t comment any further).
